Ariyike is a girl of about seventeen years of age. She is full of aspiration, hoping one day she will be well learned like any of the children of Mr. Ayelabola. Then she will be able to rescue her family from abject poverty which has bedeviled them for years before she was even born. Ariyike’s decision to be educated is well known to her father, Badero, and her siblings. However, the hurdle of debt and traditions are giant obstacles on her way. The fight between her dream, the debt and king’s insistence on enforcing tradition are like two rams that to drink from a pitcher at the same time. They must surely be at loggerheads.
